Follow This Mama’s Lead…Book Your Plane Ticket.

I remember that version of me. I look back at her and I smile. I smile and I grieve just a little. We are not meant to relive the same moments over and over again, yet our mind reminds us often of who we once were and who we wanted to be. I remember hearing from my husband that “new experiences are what keep us young.” I think to myself, hmph, who has time for that – in between bathing kids, paying for a mortgage, paying for healthcare?!

Life Starts Out Slowly

Life seems to go by slowly from age zero to 25, but then speeds up so quickly without any remorse or care. Heraclitus said it best, “time is a game played beautifully by children”.  It is not until you are making your first botox appointment that you realize you want it to slow down and you yourself need to slow down. We have so many new experiences during that first quarter century of life, giving us a false sense that life is ticking by slowly. When we are young, we dream of who we want to be, where we want to go, and how we are going to get there.

We think that forty is so old. Oh my…I have so much time before I turn 40. But guess what? Time stops for no woman nor man. So what is the solution? The solution is to create new experiences for yourself. Do not wait until this or that. Why? Why set yourself up for failure? Take charge of your life and every single new day that has been given to you. For me, new experiences equal traveling to new places.

Make Time For New Adventures

But who has money or time for new places? Well, to be frank, we all do. We just have to make it a priority. The secret to getting ahead is just getting started. A new place could be a staycation in your local town, it could be a wild-life excursion somewhere in the Midwest, or an unexpected 10-day vacation package in South America where you are climbing the Andes mountains by day and drinking Carmenere wine at a vineyard at night. Whatever it may be, do not wait. I repeat, do not wait. Start little. What do I mean by little? Start by opening your Google maps or Apple maps and type in a type of restaurant that you have never experienced. For me, this was ramen.

Type in that type of food that you are open to trying and go experience a different culture within your own hometown. At the end of the day, it is all mental. I am sure you have heard this saying before: it is all mental. Anything and everything that you do must first start in your mind. Anything that seems out of reach or too hard can be done if you put your mind to it. You must take care of yourself and love yourself enough to create new memories, but you have to take that first step. What is that first step? Book your plane ticket.
