How to Solo Travel Safely: Apps that Allow Family, Friends to See Your Location

As a traveler with constant wanderlust, I have solo traveled—much to the horror (or chagrin) of my family and friends who worry about my safety. While solo travel is safe in most destinations, I have a tip to help your family and friends stay sane with you’re off adventuring by yourself.

Several location apps are available that help you stay safe and connected with your friends and family. Whether you’re traveling far from home or hiking at a nearby state park, location-tracking apps can keep you in touch with friends and family and keep you safe.

Tell Me About Google’s Trusted Contacts App

Google has a safety app that allows your closest friends and family to see your location—even when your phone is offline. The personal safety app, Trusted Contacts, “opens a direct line of sharing between you and your family.”

You select contacts you want to share your location with. This allows you to:

  • send a notification to these contacts to let them know you’ve safely arrived at your destination.
  • share your location if you feel unsafe or if you are in an emergency.
  • schedule a location alert for a future time.

The friends and family who you are sharing your location with can also request to see your location. If you are safe, you can deny their request. If you don’t respond within a certain amount of time, your phone’s location will be sent to the person who requested it. This not only keeps you in connection with your trusted contacts, but the app can also help rescue services locate a person, even if their phone is offline.

Trusted Contacts integrates with Google Maps location sharing, so users can easily enable permanent location sharing with your family and friends. This way, you can find them directly in Google Maps.

Are There Other/Similar Apps Available?

Are you an Apple user? If so, Apple’s Find My Friends app easily locates your family and friends from your Apple devices, including your iPhone. The app is automatically installed on iPhones, iPads or iPod touches using iOS 9 through 12.

Want to keep it old school? That’s cool. Text or call your friends and family when you arrive at your destination or feel uneasy.

Whenever you are solo traveling, it is smart to share an itinerary with friends and family. Your itinerary does not have to be detailed, just list your flight details, your hotel information and other activities you’re enjoying on your adventure. This helps your family and friends keep track of where you’re supposed to be.

Solo traveling is an excellent way to learn about yourself and travel exactly how you want to, but helping your family and friends stay sane while you travel is a must.
