3 Things to Know Before Your Trip to Atlanta
Planning a trip to Atlanta? Wondering how to make the most of your time when you’re there? Here’s a guide to help you make your way around Atlanta.
Getting Around
Atlanta is a major metropolitan area, so a good transportation plan is essential. Many locals rely on MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority), a system that operates both bus and rail lines at various points throughout the city. In addition, the Atlanta Streetcar can transport you to select downtown and Eastside locations. Lyft and Uber are also available, but they’re more expensive than public transit.
There are several dangerous intersections in Atlanta, so be careful if you decide to drive around the city, especially in traffic. Before you leave, decide what spots you’d most like to visit. If you can access most or all of them by using MARTA, don’t bother with a car. If you must drive, bear in mind that it can be exceedingly difficult to find parking and that the city’s road system features many one-way streets.
Places to Eat
For an authentic Southern brunch, swing by Buttermilk Kitchen on Roswell Road Northeast. The local grit bowl and fried chicken biscuit will make you wish you lived here year-round. They also have an excellent lunch menu at affordable prices. If you’re a fan of small plates, check out the action at Gunshow. This offbeat eatery is populated by rolling carts that deliver dim-sum-style dishes to diners seated at group tables. The atmosphere is lively, so steer clear if you’d prefer a quiet, intimate evening.
An upscale, yet unpretentious, the experience can be had at Miller Union, where you’ll sample delectable dishes by executive chef Steven Satterfield. A Georgia native, Satterfield picked up the 2017 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Southeast. The menu changes frequently to showcase the freshest meats and in-season produce.
Things to Do
The World of Coca-Cola explores the history and legacy of America’s most iconic soft drink and is especially appealing to families. When the weather is pleasant, take a stroll around Piedmont Park. On Saturdays from May to December, the park hosts a “Green Market” complete with cooking demonstrations and live music.
Atlanta is also home to the largest aquarium in the western hemisphere, the Georgia Aquarium. The already-impressive marine life facility is scheduled to undergo a major expansion in 2020, including a new shark gallery.
No matter when you visit or how much time you have, you’re bound to wish that you had planned a longer stay. Have fun getting acquainted with the Gate City of the South!
