Nordic Nirvana: Discover the 4 Enchanting Lands of Scandinavia
Where is Scandinavia? Is that a country? Geographically and politically, Scandinavia is a region in northern Europe that is made up of the countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Culturally, people also include Finland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands as part of the region. The group of countries is often also referred to as Nordic.
Scandinavia has so much to offer visitors that it will be hard to see everything in one visit. It is a good idea to see Iceland and the Faroe Islands separately from the other Nordic countries given the location and how much there is to experience.
To make the most of your visit, you should plan for 10-14 days. Here are a few of our favorite things to consider for your next vacation through Scandinavia.
Denmark
Get a taste for the country’s history and cuisine with a food tour through Torvehallerne food halls and try a famous Danish hot dog. Then be sure to plan for a day trip to North Zealand where you can see a few different castles, including the Fredensborg Palace, which is where the royal family spends their summer.
Sweden
Explore Old Town where the King of Sweden resides at the Royal Palace. See the Great Church one day and then check out Skansen, the world’s largest open-air museum, the next. Be sure to grab a drink at ICEBAR located in Stockholm’s ICEHOTEL.
Norway
A favorite way to see the splendor of this country is through the Norway in a Nutshell® experience that takes you through the UNESCO-protected mountains and fjords. Your experience includes a Flam Railway ride and a fjord cruise through the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord.
Finland
Helsinki is a great home base that offers beautiful cathedrals and a unique Suomenlinna Sea Fortress to explore. You can also take an easy trip to see some of the most beautiful old town landscapes in Old Porvoo or experience a smoke sauna at Kuusijärvi.
