Packing for a vacation is never an easy feat, but packing for Muslim countries can be even more challenging and can vary based on what country you are visiting.
A main tenant of traveling is being respectful to the country and its citizens when you are visiting. As a visitor in someone else’s home and country, tourists need to show respect, especially in Muslim countries.
This is even more important in Muslim countries where what women traditionally wear can differ significantly from other countries.
Being aware and considerate will go far to ensure you and your hosts are comfortable. Here are some tips to help guide women’s packing lists for the best experience possible in Muslim countries.
- Always opt to cover up.
- Wear loose clothing that covers your arms and legs when in public. Loose clothing is modest and can be more comfortable in the heat.
- Knees should be covered at all times.
- Pack large square scarves for extra coverage and to, when appropriate, cover your hair, which can help deter unwanted male attention.
- Covering your hair is a must in mosques for women locals and travelers.
- Wearing traditional dress, such as a burka or hijab, is not required. But female travelers need to learn more about typical Muslim clothing and may dress accordingly.
